Malaysian Football: How Low Can You Go.

Malaysia Football: What happened?

We used to be so proud of our football team, and despite all the failures all these years, as Malaysian we have no choice but to still love our football team, no matter how sad or how mad we are currently feeling.

We used to have our glory days...

In the late 60s and early 70s, we are one of Asia's powerhouse..

Remember our team played in the Munich Olympics in 1972? (Yeah...so we lost to West Germany, but take note... West Germany go on to win the World Cup in 1974!)

Malaysia vs. West Germany (1972 Olympic Games Munich)

Remember we won the Bronze at the Asian Games in Iran in 1974. We beat both South Korea and North Korea in the tournament!

Remember all the Merdeka Cups that we won? The Merdeka Cup was oldest international competition in the Asian region, and considered as the premier tournament as it has attracted many strong national teams. What happen to the tournament? It has lost its luster, similar to our football team!

Recently something beyond our imagination happened. We lost to Palestine. If it is a normal lost, then it may be OK,
But we lost to Palestine (a country at war), with a humiliating scoreline of 6-0, and it happen right here in Malaysia.

And we also did terrible in the recent SEA Games!

Our current ranking is 162, lower than Bhutan (159), Faroe Islands (102) and a group of many other Caribbean Islands and South Pacific Islands.

Compared to our football facilities - big stadium such as Shah Alam and National Stadium Bukit Jalil, these countries probably do not have the funds and the land to build football infrastructure, and yet we rank lower. Unimaginably embarrassing.

It is true to say that football is our number one sports. Well if it is our number one sports why are we ranked so low. Probably we are a nation that just love to WATCH football and actually do not like to PLAY football. You can never be good at football by just watching. You can never kick a free kick like Ronaldo if you only learn how to kick like him just by watching a film of how he kick the ball. Even if you watch it 1000 times, you will never be able to come close to what he do if you don't actually practice it.

Ever wonder how and why we are good last time? I remember when I was young in the late 60s and early 70s, we play football for fun. We really do have fun. Even though we play in a tiny patch of grass covered land, or even on the outdoor badminton court, usually barefooted, in our baju melayu (my friend even wear a folded "kain pelikat"), we do enjoy and love the game.

Players now are too 'manja'. They never go through the hard times. To play nowadays, they need to have expensive boots (we play barefooted - or for those who can afford it - they buy what we called 'guards'), they need branded attire, they need to have a proper playing field...

Look at the young Maradona, young Pele, they all played football in the streets!

I remember when I was young, almost everyday, the real football field is full of people playing football, nowadays our young people no longer play football, they just like to WATCH only, on TV.

To be a great footballing nation we need everybody to be involved and actually PLAY football. Just like Germany, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Spain...they really do eat and sleep football. The more people we have playing at the grass-root level the better are our chances of producing the cream who will eventually become our national player

2014-2015 Season Football Review

Football 2014-2015 - A year in review

Congratulations to FC Barcelona for winning the treble!
A second treble in just a few years! Salute to Luis Enrique for being able to follow the footsteps of Pep Guardiola. Please take note that both are incredible FCB players as well.

FCB has now equaled Liverpool and Bayern Munich of becoming champions of Europe for the fifth time. They also cemented their status as the best team for the last ten years by winning 4 Champions League compared to only one each by AC Milan (2007), Manchester United (2008), Inter Milan (2010), Chelsea (2012), Bayern Munich (2013) and Real Madrid (2014). What's next for them? Probably to repeat as European Champions since no team has ever done that during the Champions League era.
Fabregas...to bad you left FCB for Chelsea. If you waited you might have completed your trophy collection. Now the Champions League still remains one of the things you have yet to win.

Xavi lifting the La Liga Trophy - the 23rd time for FCB.

Lifting the Copa del Rey for the 27th time.

Congratulations also to Sevilla for being crowned the Europa League Champions...
for a record 4th time, and amazingly they do it also within the last ten years!

As a Malaysian, I am somewhat proud since their shirt is clearly written 'Visit Malaysia'.

Congratulations to Chelsea for winning the Premier League and the League Cup!

Congratulations Arsenal for winning the FA Cup!

Wenger has now won 6 FA Cups, more than any other manager in the modern era. And Arsenal are now the outright leader in winning the FA Cup - 12th time.

Congratulations to Juventus for winning the domestic double!

I am happy for Tevez. It seems that wherever he goes, he is always on the winning side... Manchester United, Manchester City and now Juventus!

Congratulations to PSG for winning the domestic double...

It shows that money can buy trophies...at least in France. Not so in England. Look at how much Manchester City spend over the past few years and they are trophy-less this season. They couldn't even win the Community Shield.

Congratulations to Bayern Munich for winning the Bundesliga...

and to Wolfsburg for winning the German Cup.

What will happen next year?

Will FCB repeat as European Champions?

Will Jose Mourinho be the first to win the Champions League with 3 different teams?

Will Juventus, PSG, FCB complete their domestic double again?

Will Luis Enrique win more trophies at FCB compared to Pep Guardiola?

See what happens in the summer transfers and let us hear your say...

Best Football Manager Ever!

Will Jose Mourinho be the best football manager ever?
Or is he already!

When people talk about the best managers, if people look at the number of major trophies won (minor trophy such as Super Cups or Invitational Tournament should be excluded!), then the name of Sir Alex Ferguson will come to mind. He has won a total of 35 major trophies in 38 years since becoming a manager at Eat Stirlingshire in the Scottish League until retirement in the English League at Manchester United.

Compare to Jose Mourinho...
He has won a total of 15 major trophies in 18 years since becoming manager at Benfica until now as manager of Chelsea FC.

Both by the way have won 2 Champions League which is the ultimate prize in Europe.

Lets look at Sir Alex Ferguson who made his name at Man U. He started becoming manager for Man U in the 86/87 season and only start winning the League title in the 92/93 season - a six year wait. And that was probably because of a French player name Eric Cantona. Only after Cantona become a Red Devil does Man U become a dynasty. Only after Man U started winning with Cantona on board, that world class player wanted to play for Man U. So is the success of Man U truly because of Alex Ferguson or is it because of Eric Cantona who actually started this winning tradition.Something to question our mind...

As for Jose Mourinho, he is actually a very fortunate manager. Most of his latter trophies, is won with teams who are already champions or title contenders when he arrive...Chelsea in 2004,  Inter Milan in 2008, Real Madrid in 2010 and again Chelsea in 2013. The only 'building' process probably happens when he is at Porto in 2002. Can you still say that he is great, only because he inherit a good team? Why is Chelsea able to win the Champions League in 2012 with Roberto DeMateo after Jose left? Why is Real Madrid able to win the Champions League with Carlo Ancelotti after Jose left? Something to think about...

In order to compare in equal terms, we will probably have to wait another 20 years to see whether after 38 year of managing, who won more major trophies. Is it Ferguson? Or will it be Mourinho? Or will there be someone else...Guardiola? Ancelotti?

Why I love Arsenal?

The first game that come to mind is the FA Cup final of 1979. It was shown live by RTM at that time in black and white.
Arsenal led 2-0 for most of the game, but somehow Manchester United equalise by scoring 2 quick goal near the end of the game.
However Arsenal was meant to win the game, they score in the dying minutes, frustrating the whole Manchester United camp.
